Interview preparation

Show your judgment. Not just your job description.

Prepare four grounded stories that help an interviewer understand how you think, work, and learn.

Early-career finance setting

The takeaway

A strong answer makes your own contribution, reasoning, and learning clear without exaggeration.

Choose four examples

Prepare one example each of analysis, collaboration, a difficult decision, and a mistake or setback. Early-career candidates can use coursework, part-time work, volunteering, or a personal project. The setting matters less than whether you can describe what you actually did.

Explain the decision inside the story

Set the context briefly, then explain your responsibility, the alternatives you considered, and why you chose your approach. Be precise about what you owned versus what the team did. If the result is uncertain, say so rather than attaching a number you cannot defend.

Prepare for the second question

Interviewers may ask what changed, what you missed, or what you would do differently. Review the assumptions behind your work. Practice explaining the same example in ninety seconds and in five minutes, without turning either version into a memorized speech.

Bring questions that reveal the role

Your questions should help you decide whether you want the job. Ask about feedback, expectations, training, and the team’s hardest recurring problems.

  • What does good performance look like in the first ninety days?
  • What usually surprises someone joining this team?
  • Where does this role need more judgment than the description suggests?
