Licensing roadmap
Know what you can take—and what requires a firm.
Licensing is role-specific. Separate the exam you can begin independently from registrations that depend on the activities you will perform and a sponsoring firm.
The outcome
A realistic licensing plan tied to actual job responsibilities, sponsorship, and timing.
Start with the work, not the exam
The right qualification follows the activities of the role. Read the posting, ask what regulated functions you will perform, and confirm the employing legal entity before assuming a license is required.
Understand the SIE
The Securities Industry Essentials exam covers foundational securities-industry knowledge. Individuals can take it without association with a firm, but passing it alone does not authorize securities business.
Representative exams need context
Exams such as Series 7, 79, or 99 correspond to different functions and generally require appropriate firm association or sponsorship. State-law exams such as Series 63, 65, and 66 have their own combinations and role implications.
- Ask which exams are required on day one
- Ask which exams the firm sponsors and pays for
- Ask about study time, passing deadlines, and retake policy
- Confirm whether an existing registration transfers or must be reactivated
Many careers are unlicensed
A broad range of product, technology, finance, risk, marketing, and operations roles may not require a securities registration. Do not rule yourself out before reading the actual responsibilities.
